Declan's Chiropractor Visit #2

Just got back from Declan's second visit with Dr. Adams.  He adjusted him again and talked to me about what the last couple of days have been like.  He also looked at the 66 pictures I brought him on a thumb drive at his request.

First of all, the past couple of days have been surprisingly normal.  The reason it's surprising is because Declan has not had any Prevacid since Monday morning.  The last time that we took him off of his medicine was after my 4 weeks of dairy elimination (around Thanksgiving).  After he missed his 2nd dose (less than 24 hours), he had a very rough night.  He was gagging and gushing during his feeding that evening, and then he was up every 2 or 3 hours.  I can just assume it was heartburn.  The next day we put him back on it and went on as normal, so I know he was still experiencing symptoms at that point.  So, the decision to take him off of it after Monday's appointment was a cautiously optimistic one.

Declan recently started sleeping 12-13 hours at night (before we took him off of the Prevacid).  I was a little worried this progress would be damaged if we took him off, but he's maintaining it.  (phew!)  That is the "big one" in terms of indications that his first adjustment helped something.  He's also spitting and spewing less (although it's not completely eliminated).  So, he's either finally outgrowing his acid reflux this week or the adjustments are helping (c:

While looking at Declan's pictures, Dr. Adams said that Declan definitely had birth trauma.  I wasn't expecting to hear that.  When I was picking out the pictures, I looked closely but I didn't think I saw any strong trend of a tilted head.  These are a few that he pointed out in particular:

Turned to the left

Turned to the left

Turned to the left

Turned to the right but slight tilt to the left

He said this was one of the most telling pictures because he's holding his own head, camera is dead center in front of him, and there's still a tilt to the left.

He said that Declan definitely had birth trauma, but it isn't so obvious in more recent pictures because he has gained neck strength.  He said we still might notice it when Declan starts to get tired.

Now Dr. Adams wants us to have 3 more appointments over the next month and he'll re-examine, but he feels like Declan will be reflux free by then.  He said some kids do take longer but he doesn't think that will be Declan based on the progress we've already seen.

I am playing devil's advocate in my head, just because I don't like to be a sucker.  And because Ryan is a little skeptical of my whole "Chiropractors are Magical" theory.  Declan very well could be outgrowing his reflux on his own (most babies do it by 12-18 months old).  Financially, is it the right decision to go on with adjustments?  After 3 more appointments, we'll have spent $250.  Declan's Prevacid is almost $60 a month.  If he's going to deal with reflux til he's a year old and need the Prevacid, we'll come out even by treating it now.  If he's outgrowing it on his own at almost 8 months old, then we're "wasting" our money.

I like to think of the unknown things we may be treating, though, by correcting his vertebral sublaxation.  A healthy spinal column enables the body to heal itself, and also allows for optimal immunity.  I don't know if it's a proper way to look at it, but I think adjustments are kind of like a tune-up?  It's preventative maintenance, too.  That is hard to put a price on since we don't know what the future holds.  Financial isn't the only angle to consider, but unfortunately it's a big factor.  It has to make sense to Ryan.

Would love to hear arguments either way if you've got an opinion.

  1. I'm a huge proponent of homeopathic
medicine, and from your blog I'm hearing huge improvement. If you can justify spending the money now, I say do the treatments. In my limited reading, medicine affecting stomach acid is more hit and miss than anything and I personally believe it does more harm than good. it may eliminate the problem altogether!

  2. I have to say that I too am skeptical about just about EVERYTHING (yes, even chiropractic at times), just because no one knows everything about everything. I do think that the improvements you are seeing are related to getting his system in shape. Interestingly enough (when you put the pictures up it made me remember this!), the first few times I met Declan and from Kyle seeing pictures, we made a couple of comments in passing about how his head seemed to trend towards tilting left. I honestly didn't make that connection with all of his reflux stuff, but now it makes sense!!! Even if you do break even (which you'll never really know), you are providing Declan with care that will better his health in many ways (some of which you may never know!), and you're not using a drug to 'bandaid' a problem which is probably just a symptom of a greater problem....which if not corrected could cause MORE problems. And it will almost certainly help his sleep/wake and digestion cycles and make him an even happier little guy. I TOTALLY get that finances make it a tough call, but from my perspective you guys are right on target! Also, ask your doctor if there are any discounts you guys could work out. Often chiropractors are willing to work with you if you just ask. (c:

  3. It's almost like Keely is married to a chiropractor or something! I must say that y'all are doing such a great job with doing the research and carefully making decisions. I don't want to repeat everything that Keely said, but the prevacid really is just a bandaid. What you said in the post about Declan's first adjustment is right on - Chiropractic is just misunderstood. It's amazing to see the physiological changes the body makes when the nervous system is free of interference. It's good to be a healthy skeptic, especially when it comes to your child's health. I'm not saying chiropractic is the sole reason for Declan's progression, but it's not a coincidence how quickly Declan is changing. I'm sure it's no surprise, but I say stick with it and y'all won't regret it.

  4. Thanks you guys for your opinions. They have really bolstered my faith that we're making the right choice. Ryan is fully on-board too. I'm so amazed, Keely and Kyle, that you remember noticing Declan's head tilt way back then. I guess it really takes that trained eye!

Something else that is amazing is the past 2 days I have actually heard his stomach growl before feedings. Believe it or not, I can't ever remember hearing that from him. One of the things Dr. Adams said is that the Prevacid (and other acid neutralizers) can slow the motility of food through the digestive system. He actually said there is undigested food just rotting in his stomach. I was incredulous about this, but the fact that I have heard Declan's stomach growl for the first time in months is just... wow. His stomach hasn't been empty in months!

Dr. Adams offers a family plan on a month to month basis in which all 3 of us can get adjustments every week. He will also assess our overall health and give us nutrition and lifestyle advice to achieve our health goals. The monthly fee is $175 for all of that, so basically, we could pay $150 for Declan's next 3 visits, or we could pay $175 for all 3 of us. We can't afford to do it every month, but we're going to see how it goes and maybe do it quarterly. I'm stoked!

  5. I like the quarterly plan. Does your insurance cover any of it?

  6. The doctor's office doesn't accept insurance on the plans, so no. But we'd have to meet a $6000 deductible first, even if they did it wouldn't be worth it.

  7. That's awesome! I've been looking into the benefits of alternative treatments. I like the idea of trying to minimize the number of chemicals I put into my body. I also like the fact that it is generally more affordable.
